Seventh International Andrei Ershov Memorial Conference «PERSPECTIVES OF SYSTEM INFORMATICS»

15-19 June, 2009, Novosibirsk, Akademgorodok, Russia

Workshop "The History of informatics in Siberia"

The workshop "The History of informatics in Siberia" is devoted to the 50th anniversary of the Programming Department. It is to be held within the framework of the Conference "Perspectives of System Informatics" in June 15-19 2009 in Novosibirsk. http://psi.nsc.ru/psi09/index

The history of this team was started in 1957, when academician S. Sobolev, one of the founders of the Siberian Branch of USSR Academy of Sciences and the first director of the Institute of Mathematics, proposed Andrei Ershov for a head of the Programming Department in his Institute. But formally Igor Pottosin became the first head of the department according to the order issued on the 1st of November 1958, the "birthday" of the Department. From the very beginning, A. Ershov was the actual leader of the department taking active part in hiring staff members, as well as in choosing the research direction. In 1961, he moved to Academgorodok and became the formal head of the Programming Department. In 1964, it joined the newly established Computing Center of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. On the site http://pd.iis.nsk.su/ we present some information on the history of the department.

A. Ershov gathered a team of young graduates from the leading Soviet universities. The first significant project of the Department was aimed at the development of ALPHA system, an optimizing compiler for an extension of Algol 60 implemented on a Soviet computer M-20. This compiler was recognized as the best in his class and it was widely used for solving scientific and technical problems not only in the Siberian Branch, but in the whole country.

Later the researchers of the Department created the Algibr, Epsilon, Sigma, and Alpha-6 programming systems for the BESM-6 computers. The list of their achievements also includes the first Soviet time-sharing system AIST-0, the multi-language system BETA, research projects in artificial intelligence and parallel programming, the integrated tools for text processing and publishing, and many others.

The scope of problems facing the Programming Department was widening in time, its organizational structure changed and there appeared new research directions, school informatics and mixed computation among them.

Founded in 1990, the Institute of Informatics Systems named by Andrei Ershov is justly considered to be a successor of the Programming Department keeping its main research directions and maintaining its best traditions. From the very beginning A. Ershov paid much attention to staff training starting from the school age. Students from the Novosibirsk State University had their practical courses in the Department and later some of them became its staff researchers, others went to the institutes of the Siberian Branch and throughout the country. Many specialists from many cities, like Kishinev, Tallinn, Kiev, had their post-graduate or post-doc studies in the department. Andrei Ershov as a person, and his ideas later, had a profound effect on the development of computer science in our country. Close scientific and personal relationships were established with the leading programming communities of the USSR and foreign countries - USA, France, Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and others.

Now Ershov´s disciples, and disciples of his disciples, are working in the academician institutes, universities, leading Russian and international IT-companies in many cities of Russia and abroad.

This workshop is intended to be a meeting point for old friends and colleagues and to present the best traditions of the Programming department to young people.
